When We All Get to Heaven is a documentary podcast that tells the story of how one of the first gay-positive churches, the Metropolitan Community Church of San Francisco, faced the personal, social, and political trials of the AIDS epidemic, including the deaths of 500 of its members. In 2011 a long-time member told researcher Lynne Gerber about a collection of tapes he had stored under the floor in the church’s sound room. The collection of over 1200 cassettes had been unknown to the rest of the congregation.

Since 2017 Lynne Gerber, Siri Colom and I have been working together to turn the archival audio into a podcast telling MCCSF’s story. In 2020, we produced a digital exhibit for American Religious Sounds Project called The Pink and Purple Church in the Castro.
